USM MUSHROOM SOCIETY
The Univeristy of Southern Mississippi Mushroom Society (USMMS) began in the Spring of 2023 with the clear goal of spreading to our community the joy and fascination of all things fungi related. Since our inception, we've upheld this value through regular mushroom hunts, tours of local mushroom farms, educational field trips with local elementary schools, and even starting a petition to make Xylaria magnoliae the official state fungus of Mississippi! Due to its near subtropical climate, the Southeastern US (and especially Mississippi) is a hotspot for fungal diversity. As a club, we wish to explore this diversity and learn all there is to know about the variety of fungal organisms found in our area, from their general biology and ecology to their medical and cultural significance.
